Chances are that you’ll lock yourself out of your car or home at least once in your life. It’s pretty much inevitable, after all–it’s why locksmiths exist in the first place! Whether it’s because you are in a rush to leave your house and get to work and you lock your keys inside or because you misplaced your car key and can’t get back in your car, it’s a situation that’s no fun to be in.
If you haven’t locked yourself out yet, there’s a pretty good chance that you will. Of course no one means to do it–it’s an accident! Either way, the team at Pro-Lock and Safe decided to put together a list of tips on how you can react in this situation. As far as we see it, there are three things you can do when you get locked out. What are those things, you ask? Keep reading to find out!
If You’re Locked Out…
Don’t Panic
In our experience, being locked out usually immediately causes you to experience a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach. “Did I really leave my keys on the dining room table?” “Where did I last have my car key?” These thoughts are immediately followed by another–”what am I going to do?”
Your first instinct at this point might be to panic. We’ve heard of people doing everything from breaking their windows to get into their homes or cars to trying to pry open windows and everything else in between. Remind yourself to stay calm in this situation.
Retrace Your Steps
The next thing you might want to do is consider the questions you asked yourself in order to figure out where your keys might be. Perhaps your significant other is at home and he or she can check to see if your keys are where you left them. Maybe your parents have a spare key.
Knowing where your keys are can go a long way towards making you feel better about the situation. Simply retrace your steps and think about where your keys might be.
Call For Help
The last step is, of course, calling for help. You may be lucky enough to find that your keys were on the kitchen table and someone you live with can let you in. If that’s not the case, your best bet is to call for help–a 24-hour locksmith might just be the best solution.
But what should you look for in a locksmith? That’s a great question. Although you may be pressed for time, it never hurts to double check online reviews so you can know who you’re working with. Unfortunately we’ve heard of locksmiths out there who show up at the top of the results page, but yet have no reviews and who do work that is less than honest, quoting a low price on the call and then asking for significantly more when they show up, claiming that even if you don’t want to use their service, you still have to pay for the service call and their time.
